- U.S. soldiers prepare helicopter for air search operations. The H-13 helicopter was piloted by Major Malcolm Nurnburg of the U.S. Air Force. The Air Force Rescue personnel were led by Major Nurnberg and Navy Captain Dewitt. Original USCARIB Central caption reads: "Making preparation for the first flight to the site of a massacre where five missionares are from left Navy Chief radioman, L. J. Moore of the Naval Mission to Ecuador, 1st Lt. James E. Claunch, 23rd Div Air Section; PFC Jerry J. Dick of 23rd Air Section and Major Malcolm Nurnberg US AF Mission to Ecuador. These were some of key personnel of the joint Army, Navy, Air Force search operation for five missionaries found murdered by the Auca Indians of Ecuador."
