U. S. Army photograph of Nate Saint's destroyed plane. Original USCARIB Central caption reads: "Stripped and deserted is this monument to the five Missionaries who were murdered by fierce Auca Indians of Ecuador January 8. The five men were killed near the small wrecked plane on the Curaray River, after months of supposedly friendly relations and gift exchanging with the Indians. A joint Army, Navy, and Air Force search operation discovered the lance-pierced bodies of the missionaries after a short search in a U.S. Army H-13 Helicopter airlifted to Ecuador from the Canal Zone by Air Force and Navy C-47 type planes."
